Broadcasting company to turn KKAM into all sports station

By WILLIAM KERNS

Scott Parsons, local liaison for Austin-based Gulfstarcq Broadcasting, has announced that KKAM-Radio (1340-AM) will become Lubbock's first 24-hour, all sports radio station Monday.

With a few exceptions, KFYO-Radio (790-AM) will be transformed into a 24-hour, news-talk station the same day.

Gulfstar, which already owned KFMX-FM, KKAM-AM and KRLB-FM, announced on Oct. 4 the eventual purchase of KZII-FM and KFYO-AM. Approval of the sale by the Federal Communications Commission arrived much faster than expected, allowing Parsons to make programming changes.

Both of Lubbock's locally produced sports talk shows will remain on the air. However, they will share the same station.

Jack Dale's "Sportsline'' will be moved to weekday mornings, airing from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on KKAM. "Sports Talk with Don Williams and Ryan Hyatt'' will air from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays on KKAM.

The sports station will fill between specialty programming with the Prime Sports Network, but other weekday keepers include "The Fabulous Sports Babe'' from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and "Kate Delaney, Sports Princess'' from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Look for the Sports Princess to be dethroned quite a bit through the winter months because KKAM also has contractual rights to air Texas Tech men's basketball and the NBA broadcasts of Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets games. Tech games will take precedence if there are scheduling conflicts.

Sports exceptions that will remain on KFYO include broadcasts of Dallas Cowboys football and Texas Rangers baseball.

"The way I see it,'' said Parsons, "the NFL season is half over and I'm not going to make fans start hunting for Cowboys games. So I'm leaving them right where they are. And during baseball season, I'm also keeping the Rangers on KFYO.''

Monday will find the following weekday schedule in place on KFYO. Kay Boren, Dixon Platt and Austin Burke will share the microphone for a morning news program from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

G. Gordon Liddy's talk show will air from 9 a.m. to noon. Following a one-hour local agriculture report, Dr. Laura Schlessinger's popular talk show will air from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., with Oliver North taking over KFYO's airwaves from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Parsons said he expects to field complaints about the sports broadcasts being moved from KFYO to KKAM, a lower power station. He noted, "All I can say is that we are in the process of putting together packages and adding affiliates throughout the market. This will allow those affiliates to take the direct feeds of our locally produced sports programming and air it live.''
